If you are like me and unable to get to campus today, you may be worrying about missing more class time or completing all your work.  Here are some ideas to help you communicate with and get content to students when you can’t be there in person.  Technology is a great help during weather events like this one!

  • Record short, 5-minute screencast videos using Jing.  Jing is free, it simply requires you to create a screencast.com account and download a small piece of software on your computer.  Send students the link to your video.
  • Meet virtually with your students via Google Chat or Google Hangouts (up to 10 people).  Simply start a chat or hangout, the add your students to it.  Because we all have Google Apps for Education, you know your students already have accounts.
  • Use your iPad to record a whiteboard presentation using apps like Doceri, Screen Chomp, or Educreations.  All are free and easy to use.  Simply hit record and start writing on the screen.  To share, send students the link to your video.
  • Use Google Drive to present some information and use the integrated chat feature to answer and ask questions and elicit responses as they view the lecture/ document.

If you have other ideas please share them with us – the comments are open.  Stay warm and safe!
